The property is rented, and the current tenants were out of town.

The estimated cost of repairs is $600.

? Scott Shover, 53, no fixed address, was charged with public drunkenness July 26.

Police received a report that Shover had fallen near the intersection of East Mulberry Avenue and North East Street at 8:52 p.m. July 23. When police arrived, he was sitting on the curb.

Emergency crews cleared Shover medically before police took him to the police station and kept him in a holding cell until he was sober.

Shover was also charged with public drunkenness on July 21 for a July 19 incident.

State police at Carlisle (249-2121)

? Sarah A. Fry, 78, of Carlisle suffered minor injuries when her 2003 Chevy Venture crashed into a tree near the intersection of Route 641 and Carlton Avenue in South Middleton Township at 4:45 p.m. July 24.

Fry was traveling on Route 641 and began to turn right onto Carlton Avenue when she became distracted.

Police said Fry continued to turn the vehicle and it went off the west side of the road and hit the tree.

The Venture had to be towed.

? Lloyd Alton Rowe, 55, of Newville was charged with public drunkenness after police said he was seen walking in the eastbound lane of Roxbury Road in Upper Mifflin Township while intoxicated at 8:40 p.m. July 23.

? An unknown vehicle tried to pass a 2000 Ford Focus on the shoulder of Interstate 81 in South Middleton Township and hit its front bumper at 10:14 p.m. July 23.

The Focus was traveling in the right southbound lane near mile marker 47 when the other vehicle tried to pass it.

The Focus sustained minor scrapes to its front bumper from the contact.

The driver of the other vehicle did not stop to leave information.

No one was injured.

A Shorewood woman jogging on the Oak Leaf Trail about 5:45 p.m. Thursday was stopped by two men who tried to grab an Apple iPhone strapped to the jogger's arm.

The men, ages 51 and 64 and both from Milwaukee, fled emptyhanded after the woman screamed. The men fled on bicycles northbound on the bike path. Police caught up with them a short time later, at Culvers, 1325 E. Capitol Dr.

    * A Port Washington woman came into the Shorewood police station Thursday to report a stolen credit card and $23 in cash from her unlocked car. The vehicle was parked in the 2600 block of East Jarvis Street at the time.
    * After a 20-year-old Milwaukee woman attempted to pay for $338 in groceries from Pick ‘n Save, 4145 N. Oakland Ave., with a closed checking account, her friend, a 20-year-old Milwaukee man, walked out with two cartons of cigarettes on Sunday, police say. Police later found the two driving on North Pierce Street on Milwaukee’s east side. The Milwaukee man was arrested for retail theft.
    * While police were clearing empty beer cans from privately-owned lakefront Monday, a red pickup parked on North Lake Drive with an open case of the same beer in the cab was observed. Police cited a 20-year-old Milwaukee man for underage drinking.

In the spirit of the Tour de France bicycle race, I arose early Sunday morning and rode my own Tour de Howard Gnesen. Almost all of us who ride identify in some small way with the world’s most prestigious cycling event going on now in France.

My chances looked good Sunday. I saw no other riders, which is often the case when I ride the Tour de Howard.

The Tour de Howard takes a rider through the quiet Minnesota countryside, past tidy yards, rural daycare centers and the occasional antique tractor. A sign at the end of one drive says, “Farm Fresh Eggs, $3.00.”

I am free to observe all of this because, unlike Tour de France riders, I am not bothered by a hundred other riders traveling wheel to wheel and handlebar to handlebar.

The only sound I hear is that of air passing through the nubby tires of my 10-year-old mountain bike. On the downhills, the air passing over those nubs makes a singing sound and provides the illusion of speed.

When one is leading a stage of the Tour de Howard, as I was on Sunday, he faces the inevitable questions about drugs. And unlike many Tour de France riders, I think it’s best to be up front about it. Then it was back to the relentless grind, the insane climbs and the flirting-with-death descents that make the Tour de Howard the spectacle it is. I cranked up the final climb to my home and wilted in the saddle.

I’ve grown accustomed to that kind of adulation as leader of the Tour de Howard.

“When it came time to dial in some power the Star was the bad-boy. It feels like a Twin and accelerates like a big-bore,” says our Editorial Director Ken Hutchison. “No surprise as it’s the biggest engine in the bunch and as they say – there’s no replacement for displacement. In our roll-on tests in the real world, the Star didn’t feel like it had the most bottom end, but it came on like gangbusters and dusted the other bikes every time.”
